Nothing beats the feeling of cool air on a hot summer day but is it making you sicker?
The first AC unit was invented in the year 1902, for more than a century human being have been using air conditioning units to cool their indoor environment.
But till date we have people who can’t sit in an air-conditioned environment for too long and have to switch off the system or get out. Question arises why?
Possible Reasons why your A/C is doing more harm than good to you: –
1. Dryness due to lack of Moisture
Yes, Air conditioners do take out moisture from the environment just like it takes out heat to cool the air it makes it dry too. When in a closed space the air conditioner recirculates the air back and forth removing heat and Humidity to make the environment comfortable. Due to improver circulation of the air due various underlining causes such as poor unit sizing or inadequate maintenance of the A/C unit the air could become less or more humid than what its supposed to be making a person feel less comfortable and possibly leading to respiratory issues and skin problems.
2. Inadequate Ventilation leading to Sick Building Syndrome (SBS)
There are many theories on what causes sick building syndrome. Commonly cited causes are inadequate ventilation, chemical contaminants from indoor sources, and chemical contaminants from outdoor sources or seepage in the walls leading to the formation of fungi and bacterial growth.
3. Clogged Air Filter
In most cases when the air conditioner is underperforming and not cooling the air up to the mark is due to a clogged air filter. The role of the air filter is to trap dust and mite present in the air from entering the A/c unit so the there is less overall wear and tear of the equipment additionally it acts as an air cleaner so that you’re breathing healthier free from dust and allergens. Treated fresh air and timely replaced filter can mitigate the ill effects and give a cool comfortable and healthy environment.
4. Running the thermostat too cold
Selecting the right A/C tonnage is more essential than anything apart from the fact it saves you money on the electricity bills it also keeps you healthy. Really?
Running your A/C too cold can lead to possible health effects. The relationship of how viruses and bacteria react to the temperature and humidity in the environment is complex. A low temp and low humid environment can possibly make our mucus linings dry in some people causing the foreign agents to easily impregnate our bodies. Thus, its essential to keep our thermostat in check to have a stronger immune system.
